AIADMK, Sena MPs in panel oppose GST
NEW DELHI: The AIADMK continued to oppose the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill with the party member in the Select Committee objecting to the tax reform saying it would harm the interests of Tamil Nadu. During a meeting of the panel on Friday, the AIADMK member said the Bill was not acceptable at all to the party.
The AIADMK member is learnt to have argued that Tamil Nadu would lose heavily due to GST as it does not have any safeguards to protect the interests of the manufacturing state.
The Bill, passed by the Lok Sabha during the Budget session, was referred to the Select Committee after opposition in Rajya Sabha insisted on its legislative scrutiny.
The 21-member panel, which is supposed to submit its report by the last day of the first week of the Monsoon session (possibly in July), may hold separate meetings in south, east and western India during June 22-24 to take views of chief ministers.
Being a Constitution amendment bill, it requires to be passed by both Houses of Parliament by a two-thirds majority. Once passed by Parliament, the Bill will then need ratification of more than half of the 29 states before its scheduled rollout in April next year.
The GST was first mooted 12 years ago but couldn’t be approved as states feared curbs on their fiscal powers.
Bhalchandra Mungekar (Congress), Naresh Agrawal (SP), K C Tyagi (JD-U), Derek O’Brien (Trinamool Congress), S C Misra (BSP), A Navaneethakrishnan (AIADMK), K N Balagopal (CPI-M), Dilip Kumar Tirkey (BJD), C M Ramesh (TDP), Praful Patel (NCP), Kanimozhi (DMK), Anil Desai (Shiv Sena), Naresh Gujral (SAD), Mohammad Fayaz (PDP), D Raja (CPI) and Rajeev Chandrasekhar (Independent) are among the members of the Select Committee
